Creating a Nautical-Themed Compass
One of our members has a friend who owns a boat and has a keen interest in nautical themes and all things related to boating. As a birthday present, I decided to create a decorative compass that could be displayed on the wall.
The project began with the construction of a frame incorporating a solid base. A suitable compass design was then sourced, traced, and refined into a clear, precise line drawing suitable for laser cutting.
Several packs of veneer were purchased and cut using the laser, allowing the individual components to be produced with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
Once cut, the veneer pieces were carefully fitted into the frame to create the compass design. The entire piece was then filled with clear resin, enhancing the appearance of the design while providing a smooth, durable finish.
Finally, picture-frame mounting brackets and hanging wire were fitted to the back, allowing the finished compass to be securely displayed on the wall.
The project was complete, resulting in a unique, personalised nautical-themed birthday gift.
